Porto Strengthens Municipal Connectivity and Accelerates the City’s Digital Transformation
The Municipality of Porto has initiated a structural reinforcement of the communications backbone – the core of the municipal network – tripling its capacity and preparing the city for the increasing volume of usage, largely driven by the expansion of video surveillance systems. This intervention represents a decisive step to ensure the continuity of Porto’s digital transformation and to support new projects planned for 2026, a process coordinated by Porto Digital.
The work, carried out yesterday in Ramalde with on-site supervision by Councillor Rodrigo Passos, included the connection of a new municipal fibre optic ring. This reinforcement will increase the municipal network’s transmission capacity by approximately 300%, enhancing the speed, stability and security of communications that support public services, schools, universities and municipal facilities. On the significance of this advance, the Councillor responsible for Digital Transition emphasised:
"This is another important step to ensure that the city of Porto continues to prepare for the challenges of the future. A modern, reliable network with greater capacity allows us to improve services, support schools, universities and public institutions, and create better conditions for those who live, study and work in Porto."
The completed reinforcement will enable the continuation of the infrastructure expansion plan to the eastern area, extending the network to Campanhã. This phase will ensure connectivity for the remaining municipal neighbourhoods not yet integrated into the city’s fibre optic network, allowing the provision of new Internet access services and increased communication capacity for local public facilities and services. The capacity increase will also enable, early next year, the expansion of the video surveillance network in the Ramalde area, strengthening operational capacity for security forces and improving response in critical city services.
This intervention is part of a structural project to modernise municipal technological infrastructure, funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), and aligns with the priorities set for reinforcing the resilience, capacity and security of the municipality’s communications. Through these actions, coordinated by Porto Digital, the Municipality of Porto continues to consolidate the foundations of a more connected, efficient and inclusive city, ensuring that technological infrastructure keeps pace with the ambition and speed of Porto’s digital transformation.
